In a few short years, Big Data — defined as the processing of the data we generate every day through “connected devices” (computers, smartphones, credit cards) —has become an extremely pervasive myth, an immeasurable mass of information, stored in a “cloud,” that represents a digital copy of the world and each and every one of us. Some people think of data as a totalitarian tool used to serve commercial interests in the most unethical way, which is set to become a mass control weapon. Others believe that, if we were to analyze the data properly, we would be able to predict future actions based on past behavior — and propose solutions perfectly adapted to our most intimate, individual needs. Is big data hell or heaven ?
